Abhaya is a personal safety application designed for women in India. We operate on a strict “zero-backend” architecture, meaning your most sensitive operational data—specifically real-time location and audio—stays strictly on your device and is never stored on our servers.
By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the application.
2. Data We DO NOT Collect
To protect your absolute privacy, Abhaya enforces a strict data minimization policy:
- Audio & Voice: All AI distress detection is processed entirely locally on your smartphone via on-device models. We do NOT record, store, stream, or transmit your voice or background audio.
- Real-time Location History: We do not track, log, or save your location history on our external servers.
- Personal Identity: We do not require account registration, names, phone numbers, or email addresses to utilize the basic functions of the app.
- Sale of Data: We do not sell, trade, or rent your data to any third party.
3. Data We Collect (Limited Scope)
We only transmit data to our backend infrastructure when it is technically necessary to execute user-initiated actions or maintain app stability:
- Safety Map Pins: Anonymized geolocations, hazard tags, and time details that you voluntarily submit to populate the crowd-sourced public safety map.
- Crash Reports & Analytics: Anonymized diagnostic information collected via Firebase to help us resolve crashes, patch bugs, and optimize battery drain performance.
- FCM Device Tokens: Unique cloud messaging tokens utilized solely to deliver incoming SafeNeighbour community alerts and network notifications to your smartphone.
4. Device Permissions and Usage
To provide active safety monitoring, the app requires access to specific system components, used explicitly as detailed below:
- Microphone: Used exclusively for active, on-device AI distress keyword and trigger pattern detection.
- Location: Required to display the interactive safety map and to package your precise coordinates into outbound emergency messages.
- SMS & Phone Status: Triggered during an active SOS state to automatically send emergency alerts to your designated contacts and initiate automated voice calls to your primary contact.
- Camera & Storage: Required to capture and save encrypted media locally inside the app’s secure sandbox on your device.
- Contacts: Used locally to let you browse and pick emergency contacts seamlessly from your address book. This data is never uploaded.
5. Third-Party Data Processors
We partner with a limited number of service providers to handle specialized core app mechanics:
- Google Firebase: Used to handle cloud push notifications (FCM) and aggregate crash diagnostics.
- Supabase: Used as our secure, encrypted cloud database for storing anonymous public safety map pins.
- OpenStreetMap: Used to fetch and display interactive, open-source maps within the app interface.
6. Data Retention
- Encrypted Evidence: Stored exclusively on your hardware storage partition. Media is removed permanently if you delete the clip inside the app or uninstall the application.
- Map Pins: Automatically and permanently deleted from our Supabase database servers after 90 days.
- Analytics Data: Retained inside Google Firebase for a standard period of 14 months before automated deletion.
7. Regulatory Compliance (DPDP Act 2023)
In accordance with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, you maintain full rights to access, correct, or request the complete erasure of any personal data processed by us. Because we use a decentralized architecture that avoids personal identifiers, you can instantly exercise your right to be forgotten simply by clearing the app cache or completely uninstalling Abhaya from your mobile device.
8. Important Disclaimer
Abhaya is a supplemental safety assistance application and is NOT a standalone replacement for official emergency services. In any active, life-threatening situation, always contact government emergency responses directly by dialing 112, 100, or 181.
